A special education teacher at Knowlton Elementary has been recognized for her unwavering commitment to students.

Shaunee McFadden received the 2026 Heidi Martin Mighty Heart Educator of Excellence Award during a surprise school assembly, where students, staff and district leaders gathered to celebrate her. Standing in the back of the room, McFadden had no idea her name was about to be announced. When it was, she became visibly emotional as she made her way to the front, where her husband was waiting to support her.

The Davis Education Foundation presents the award annually to one Davis School District educator who demonstrates exceptional heart, dedication and service. McFadden, a special education resource teacher, has long supported students in the district. Her career began as a volunteer before becoming a licensed teacher after earning her degree from Weber State University.

“She thinks about them (her students) 24/7 and is always looking for ways to help them. She has a love for the underdog and wants them to feel confident and succeed,” Knowlton Elementary Principal Jeri Thomas said.

The honor comes with a $10,000 grant for the school. McFadden said she plans to use the grant to invest in technology, incentives and classroom resources designed to strengthen student learning.

“Everyone has potential, everybody can learn, everybody can grow. It looks different for everybody but everybody can make progress,” McFadden said.

Even on the day she was honored, McFadden considered skipping the assembly to stay with a student who needed support.

“I’ve always believed that kids come first, no matter what,” McFadden said.
